The leaves flew past the window. I shivered at the thought of going outside on a cold day like this. To bad mom and dad want to go out shopping. I don’t have a say in anything. It pisses me off that I have to do everything they say. Most things I know that they tell me to do are wrong, but they beat me if I don’t.
“Come on,” mom said smacking me on the back of the head.
“ Stop f**king touching me!” I screamed.
“What did you say to your mother?!” dad bellowed.
“ I told her to stop hitting me like that, for no reason!”
Dad grabbed my arm and pulled me outside.
“Stop!” I yelled, slapping his hand, trying to get him to let go. He just tightened his grip. I tried to pull away but the was too strong. He opened the car door with such force that I thought it was gonna break the door. He threw me in and slammed the door shut.
“Now your gonna wait there until me and your mother are ready!”
I sat there. Waiting. I looked at my Dora cereal box watch. It was 9:30PM . I’ve been waiting there for about an hour. They’re probably drinking I though. I started to play with my long brown hair. I sat up straight when my father came out from the front door. He was wobbling and looked like he was about to fall. He threw open the car door and stumbled in.
“where’s mom?” I asked.
“She’s coming,”
I rested my head on the window sill for about 15 minutes, I saw mom come out. She was walking just like dad. A large bottle of wine was in her hand. It was only 1/5 full. When mom sat in the passengers seat I tapped her on the shoulder.
“Uh mom, didn’t you buy that bottle of win today?”
“No it wasn’t. I bought this yesterday...”
“I’m pretty sure you-“
”I bought this yesterday!” She screamed.
I backed off and looked at dad. He was asleep at the wheel. UGH, I thought. I looked at mom to see what she would do. She just took another sip of wine. I sat there for awhile. Just looking out of the window. The mall is probably closed by now, I thought. I heard a ruffling in the front seat and sure enough, I saw dad getting out of the car. I opened the door and stepped out.
“Dad?” I mutter. My voice sounded horse and you could tell I was tired.
“What,” he mumbled. “I’m going to get a beer then I’m going back to sleep.”
“I thought we were going to the mall?”
“Its late now thanks to you.”
“Oh ok.” I followed him into the house. He went into the kitchen and opened the frig. He took a can of beer and quickly gulped it down. He walked to the couch and laid down. I walked into my room and layed on my bed. I fell asleep shortly after that. I woke up the next morning and looked around the house. Mom still wasn’t there. I opened the front door and walked outside. From a distance I saw mom laying with her head back. I ran up to the car and flung open the door. Tears filled my eyes. I grabbed mom’s shoulder and shook it vigorously.
“Mom? Mom? Mom!” She didn’t respond. I felt her chest to see if she was breathing. She wasn’t. I didn’t want to believe it. My mom dying and me being left with only my dad.
It was obvious my dad didn’t care for me at all. He thought that since I was 15 I could take care of myself. But mom... She loved me. Well she showed it when she wasn’t drinking. Now I was here. Left by myself. Alone... so alone... I ran back to the house and called the police. They came in a minute or so. They arrested my dad. They said he was responsible for her. They took me too. They brought me to a home. Lots of other girls where there. It was nice I guess. For a little while. 3 meals a day. A bed. A warm place to sleep. I looked out of the window. My fingered pressing on the cold glass. I wonder, if my parents never started to drink, what life would be like.
